Defining “Design-Build”

The Design Build Institute of America defines “Design/Build” this way: “It is a method of project delivery in which one entity – the design-build team – works under a single contract with the project owner to provide design and construction services. One entity, one contract, one unified flow of work from initial concept through completion.” Mayer Building Company is a bit wary of the exhausted catch-phrase, “Design/Build.”  Some pick-up truck contractors use that popular phrase to make sales without doing one thing different than they ever have.

No, Mayer Building Company does not have a registered architect on staff. However, when and where the project calls for it,  when and where the owner may need it, Mayer Building Company employs its relationships with different sized and specialized Louisiana Registerd Architects, several Interior Designers and a very handy Draftsman or two. Often, it has happened that the owner asked us to take on some or all of the design aspect of a project. With the above resources and the ability to contract with designers directly, Mayer Building Company, in the interest of a project’s owner, fits nicely into the DBIA’s definition.

We have completed two renovations of rental properties this way, a second story expansion, and are underway on a major interior finishes renovation with the help of DesignLab Nola and Mis En Place.
